Pride Goes Before a Fall

I watched an NHK program titled "The Aftermath of the Zero Fighter." The Zero Fighter, a culmination of Japan's technological prowess at the time, seemed to be overwhelmingly superior, facing no worthy opponent. However, the contrasting responses of Japan and the US were intriguing. The U.S. produced an instructional video for pilots advising them to dive quickly to escape when they encountered a Zero Fighter. A young Ronald Reagan even made an appearance in it. Moreover, they thoroughly analyzed the weaknesses of the Zero Fighter and developed tactics to counter it. On the other hand, Japan did not update the technology of the Zero Fighter, and it eventually was used for kamikaze missions. It feels like a story that could happen in the modern era. There must be numerous cases of entities falling from grace due to their prior dominance. Why do we keep repeating the same mistakes? -Text and illustration by Ted Sakaki
