40日間の夏休み｜40 Days of Summer Vacation

なぜ学生には長い夏休みがあるのだろう。小学校、中学校、高校、大学と合わせて16年間40日間もの夏休みがある。日々の勉強から離れリフレッシュする？いつもとは違う体験をする？思い起こすと小学6年生の時の夏休みに父が働くシアトルに滞在したことがある。見るもの体験すること初めての事だらけ。しかしあの時の経験が今の自分を作っているとも思う。そんな夏休みの過ごし方がきっと理想なんだろう。しかし社会人になった途端、長くて7日間くらいになってしまう。この長さだと日々の仕事からちょっと離れてリフレッシュするくらいだ。これが当たり前だと思っていたけれど、新たに成長・発見をするためにも再び40日間の夏休みを取るのもいいかもしれないな。（絵と文：サカキテツ朗）

Why do students have long summer vacations? Students have a 40-day summer vacation for 16 years, including elementary school, junior high school, high school, and college. To take a break from daily studies and refresh themselves? To have a different experience? I recall a summer vacation when I was in the sixth grade in elementary school, during which I stayed in Seattle, where my father worked. There were many things I saw and experienced that were new to me. I think that experience made me the person I am today. Such a summer vacation is probably the ideal way to spend it. However, as soon as I became a working adult, the length of my summer vacation would be seven days at the most. This length of time is just enough for me to get away from my daily work and refresh myself. I thought this was the norm, but it would be nice to take a 40-day summer vacation again in order to grow and discover something new. -Text and illustration by Ted Sakaki
