Consciousness

Open spaces have become more and more common in recent years. They are open spaces that do not limit usage, and anyone can come and go. Offices are also becoming more open and free-addressable. However, it is often surprisingly difficult to do anything in such places. It is hard to concentrate because of distractions. In the world of tea ceremony, it is said that enclosures have an important meaning. The enclosure creates a boundary and focuses one's attention inward. Even if the enclosure is transparent and can be seen from the outside, it is still possible to concentrate. I have heard that there is a teaching that in a place like Nodate, where there is no enclosure, one should always bring a better tea utensil. This is because it is possible to focus people's attention on the utensil. I think it is important to be aware of the means to make people focus their attention on such things. -Text and illustration by Ted Sakaki
