燃える温度|Burining Temperture|2022/01/12
最近薪ストーブがあるホテルや宿もよく見かける。薪をくべて炎を眺めながらウィスキーを飲む時間は冬らしい楽しみだ。今回の宿にも薪ストーブがあったので、早速ウィスキー片手に薪を入れて着火剤を入れ点火。勢いよく炎が上がる。ハイボールを作ってさぁ飲むぞというというと薪ストーブがおとなしい。炎はすっかり鎮火している。再度試みるが不発。炎があれば大丈夫と思っていたが、聞くと温度が重要らしい。確かに薪ストーブの上に温度計があるではないか。温度計が200度以下だと炎があっても、火が安定しない。最初に200度まで上げるのがポイントだという。炎で火がつくと思っていたけれど、温度が重要だったとは。きっと40年以上前に学校の理科で習ったのだろうなぁ。(絵と文:サカキテツ朗)
Recently I often find hotels and accommodations with firewood stoves. I am happy to watch fire flames while drinking whiskey in winter time. Since there was a wood stove in this hotel, I put firewood on one hand immediately and put an igniter. Flame rose vigorously. I made a highball and I readied to drink it. I found flames were completely extinguished. I tried again. I thought that a big flame was needed, but I heard the temperature seemed to be more important. Certainly there was a thermometer on the wood stove. If the thermometer is less than 200 degrees, the fire does not stabilize. It is said that it is the point to raise to 200 degrees. I thought that it was likely to catch fire with a flame, but the temperature was important. I guess I learned about science in school more than 40 years ago. -Text and illustration by Ted Sakaki
