The Epitome of Survival

My two-year-old daughter wanted to go to the aquarium, so I took her. It is in the Shinagawa Prince Hotel, and I thought it would be nothing special, but it was quite worth seeing. We had a great time watching the dolphins running wild in the water and the aquarium tank that extends all the way to the ceiling. A school of fish swam in unison next to a ray swimming gracefully with a smile on its face. Then the rays were chasing down the fish with their cloak-like bodies. At first I thought it was accidentally covered up, but then that smiling face turned into a devil. The fish is swallowed up with a crunching sound. A tail fin peeks out from the mouth of the satisfied ray. The mother and daughter who were witnessing the event were pale. Ah, the elegant aquarium is in fact a microcosm of the struggle for survival. -Text and illustration by Ted Sakaki
